At its Volunteer Appreciation Holiday Reception at New Dorp Moravian Church on Dec. 17, the Staten Island Long-Term Recovery Organization honored several of its volunteers with awards to those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their efforts to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy.
A special Jessica Sokol Memorial Award — in honor of a Sandy volunteer that later took a full-time position at Project Hospitality but passed away from cancer in early December — was presented to volunteers Stephanie Argento Beharovic, Tom Basile, and Louise Lissard, who partnered with the LTRO since its inception in November 2012.
New Dorp Moravian Church received a Hospitality Award for offering the church hall as a meeting place since November 2012 when Hurricane Sandy hit.
Rev. Terry Troia, president of the LTRO, delivered a greeting and compared the endurance of the LTRO to the candles lit during the eight days of Hanukkah. “The candles represent God sustaining people for eight days,” she said at the awards dinner, which took place on the second night of Hanukkah. “Don’t let the light go out,” she told the volunteers.
